MARCHE ST. PIERRE
by: Jean Claude Roy
Marche St. Pierre, an original painting from Jean Claude Roy, depicts Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives’ old fashioned street market. The village is located in the Normandy region of France and is well-known as a market town, particularly on Monday mornings. The market “comes to life and welcomes local producers all bringing the flavours of the Pays d’Auge and Normandy: ciders, cheeses, dairy products."
J C Roy is an accomplished landscape painter who divides his time between France and Newfoundland. He describes his style as ‘expressionist-colourist’ and works most frequently in oils.
In their profile of Roy, the Harbour Gallery says, “Jean Claude works almost exclusively on site and has frequently done so in freezing and wet weather, often carrying his equipment over long distances in order to find the right spot. It is not uncommon for an insect, a blade of grass, or a flower to find its way into his work, either by accident or purposefully by his own hand.”
“Characteristic of his landscapes are vast, highly coloured, and increasingly abstract skies.”
