Icewine II features a wintry scene with rows of vines, heavy with grapes, ready for harvesting. This original painting from Chantal Poulin is a nod to the Icewine harvest season taking place most often in January in Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country.
Icewine must be produced exclusively from grapes that have been harvested, naturally frozen on the vine, and pressed in a continuous process while the air temperature is -8° Celsius (17.6°F) or lower. Icewine grapes are often harvested during the night to guarantee a temperature below -8° Celsius.
The Cannery houses a collection of local landscapes by Poulin that depict the vineyards and terrain in which surrounds Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Poulin and her husband, Eric Durocher, settled in Niagara-on-the-Lake and opened a gallery in a 19th century Georgian manor on the scenic Niagara River Parkway. It is during this time that Poulin created the pieces that hang on these walls.
Poulin’s impressionist landscapes launched her career 1978. She’s since shifted to expressionist still life’s and total abstraction. Durocher has since left Niagara-on-the-Lake and now resides in Costa Rica.
